Trauma anaesthetics (TAG)

The Trauma Anaesthesia Group (TAG) is a group of dedicated specialist anaesthetists that support the trauma service by delivering clinical care for major trauma patients in the emergency department, operating theatres, and critical care unit. In addition, they support the trauma ward by delivering regional anaesthesia for limb injuries and truncal fractures usually in the form of a regional anaesthesia catheter service. Aside from their clinical role the TAG team is responsible for several projects and initiatives within the within the wider trauma service where they provide specialist input. There are a total of 12 specialist trauma anaesthetic consultants and the service is led by Dr Dan Nevin.

Training in advanced trauma anaesthesia successfully delivered to anaesthetic trainees. Basic, intermediate, higher and advanced trauma anaesthesia is supported and mapped to the RCoA curriculum. Advanced trainees in trauma anaesthesia have a bespoke programme which exposes them to the breadth of trauma anaesthesia and supplements transferrable skills.

TAG can support advanced trauma training to 2 senior trainee anaesthetists at a time. Clinical opportunities and learning opportunities have been mapped to the Special Interest Area “Trauma and Stabilisation” of the 2021 RCoA curriculum.

Establishment of trauma fellow programme. Currently supports one military trauma fellow, one Research/ Trauma fellow and one joint Paediatric/ Adult trauma fellow. Fellowship leads to sign off in advanced trauma & higher regional or advanced regional and higher trauma dependent on incumbent needs and ambitions.
