Welcome.
The Royal Hospital NHS Trust was formed in 1994 from The Royal London Hospital, St Bartholomew's Hospital, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Mile End Hospital and The London Chest Hospital. The name later changed to Barts and the London NHS Trust.
On 1st April 2012 Barts Health NHS Trust was created by bringing together three hospital trusts: Barts and The London NHS Trust, Newham University Hospital NHS Trust and Whipps Cross University Hospital NHS Trust.
The Royal London has a large and busy anaesthetic department comprising of more than 100 substantive anaesthetic consultants (some of whom split their work across sites or with ITU roles at the Royal London or elsewhere).
It is home to the HEMS helicopter and is one of the busiest major trauma centres in London.
We have 18 adult, 2 obstetric, 4 paediatric theatres and provide anaesthesia for interventional radiology at RLH, a pair of GA suites in the associated dental hospital, and a pain procedure room at Mile End Hospital.
The department provides anaesthetic services for major vascular surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, oral-maxillo-facial surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedics, general, colorectal and hepatobiliary surgery, gynaecological and gynaecological-oncology surgery, in addition to being a centre for robotic surgery.
